Despite the cultural relevance and ubiquity of the Trayvon Martin case, I haven’t written about it since the trial started. No blogs, no articles, and not even any tweets or status messages.
This silence has been intentional. I have a sizable emotional stake in the outcome, and keeping up with and writing about the daily ebs and flows of a court case that may not end for weeks—and, most importantly, may not end how I want it to end—would burn me out. I’ve read many of the news stories and opinion pieces spawned by it, but writing—and the thinking/re-writing process that usually accompanies it—is just more of an investment for me.
I decided to break my silence tonight after a friend forwarded a story about the case to me that, all things considered, may very well be the saddest thing I’ve ever read.
As we begin July’s month of grilling as we’ve done in the past, I thought I’d start off with a dish which is very easy to prepare and has the wonderful flavors of the Caribbean in every bite. Don’t be intimidated with the amount of scotch bonnet pepper we used as it’s well balanced with the earthy sweetness of the honey. If Tehya can come upstairs with clean bamboo skewers in hand and say “dad this shrimp was on point!”, I’m sure you can handle the little Caribbean sunshine of it all.
Notes: Wear gloves when handling scotch bonnet peppers and do remember to wash your hands immediately after with soap and water. Do NOT include any of the seeds and white membrane surround the seeds if you’re overly concerned about the raw heat.
If you’re not sure how to peel and devein shrimp, watch this video…
There are really just two steps to preparing this dish (marinate and grill).. So let’s start off by marinating the shrimp. In a strong zipper bag or plastic container, place the cleaned shrimp and all the other ingredients. Give it a good toss and store it in the fridge for one hour.
As the shrimp marinates, I’d recommend soaking the bamboo skewers in water to help prevent them from burning while on the grill. After one hour, it’s just a matter of threading the shrimp onto the skewers and heading out to a relatively hot grill. If you have a grill pan, you can certainly make these indoors on your stove.
When I cleaned my shrimp I left a little bit of the tail/shell on, just for presentation purposes.. the choice is yours.
Lightly grease your grill surface to prevent sticking (I used cooking spray, but you can dampen a paper towel with vegetable oil and brush) then place the skewers on (medium/low flame) on one side for 3-4 minutes.
After which you’ll then flip them over and cook for another couple minutes. Try not to over-cook them and pay attention to any flare-ups which may cause them to burn. The lid of my grill was covered during the grilling process . Remember they will continue cooking with its residual heat after removing off the direct flame, so factor that in so you don’t end up with rubbery shrimp at the end.
Squeeze on some fresh lemon juice and enjoy! I got 5 skewers with the one lb of shrimp and that’s pretty much enough for 5 people (1 skewer had only 2 shrimp though). Your guests will be raving after just one bite, so I would definitely double up on the recipe (just the shrimp as there will be enough marinade) to accommodate their immediate addiction.
Don’t forget to check back all of this month for more exciting and taste-bud challenging recipes off the grill!
Robin Thicke provides fans with an audible treat in the form of snippets from his forthcoming album, Blurred Lines. The project looks to be a concise listening experience, as it clocks in at just 10 records.
Among these is the title track, “Blurred Lines,” which has moved over 840k copies in two weeks. According to Billboard, Thicke is the first artist to sell more than 40ok downloads in consecutive weeks since Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” did so for three times in a row in 2012.
Other songs include the crooner’s ode to his wife Paula Patton, “For The Rest Of My Life,” and his Kendrick Lamar-assisted follow-up single “Give It 2 U.”
Blurred Lines releases July 15 internationally and July 30 in the states. Stream the snippets and see the LP’s artwork below.
Working on the computer may sound like the most relaxed job in the world, but it’s quite the contrary. It’s very tough on your body, which is not used to this modern type of work.
Sitting has long been known to cause back pain and negatively influence circulation, which can promote cardiovascular disease. Extensive use of the keyboard and mouse can lead to stiffening of the muscles in your hands, arms, and neck, as well as inflammation and injuries. Staring at a bright screen for too long can cause dry eyes and headaches. Finally, computer work can be stressful, isolating, and lead to depression and anxiety. In other words, working on the computer is as unhealthy a job as you can imagine.
Let me show you what exactly the culprits are and how you can avoid and fix them.
Sitting Kills You
Whether you do in front of the computer, the TV, or while reading a book, sitting for long stretches of time is a very serious health risk! While sitting, your blood isn’t circulating, your back experiences a steady stress, you are more likely to drink and eat stuff that isn’t good for you, and you burn very little calories, making it more likely that you overeat. As a result,sitting contributes to a host of conditions, most notably gaining weight, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and consequently a shortened life span.
Remedies
Sitting is perfectly good and normal. It’s just when you do it excessively that it turns into a major health risk. So try to loosen it up and play with alternatives. Here is a list of things you should do:
Bad posture is not necessarily a consequence of sitting. You can develop bad posture from anything you do habitually, whether it’s sitting, standing, or walking. Your daily activities have an impact on your body and shape your muscles; they either tighten or become weak. The typical consequences associated with bad posture while working on the computer are pain in the back, shoulder, and neck, often resulting in tension headaches.
Remedies
Do everything recommended above to combat sitting-related health risks, especially taking frequent breaks and stretching.
Set up your monitor ergonomically; the top edge should be at eye level, the display should be at arms length from your face and angled slightly backward.
Get an ergonomic office chair or maybe an exercise ball to support and strengthen your lower back.
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is caused by continual physical movements that damage tendons, nerves, muscles, and other soft body tissues. This is actually a severe form of bad posture that most frequently affects the hands and leads to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Remedies
As above, take frequent breaks and stretch.
Adjust your posture to reduce strain on your wrists.
Consciously keep your hands and arms relaxed.
Use very little force when you use the mouse or keyboard.
Make sure your hands are warm.
Staring At The Screen Causes Eye Strain
Staring at a bright screen for hours can lead to eye fatigue or eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, burning, itching or tearing eyes, and temporary vision disorders. Fortunately, eye strain rarely results in a permanent condition and symptoms can be prevented or cured rather easily.
Keep at least one arm length between your eyes and your display.
Keep blinking.
Follow the 20/20/20 rule, i.e. every 20 minutes, focus on an object 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds. You can use tools like EVO or EyeLeo to remind you.
Improve the lighting in the room, particularly install bias lighting.
Moments after a Missouri businessman was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, a stunned courtroom looked on as he apparently ingested a lethal dose of cyanide, according to the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office.
Steve Parsons, 48, was convicted of statutory sodomy on June 27, a charge that could have carried up to seven years in prison.
As the judge polled each juror on their verdict, Sheriff Darren White said Parsons got up from the defense table, and walked over to where he was seated at the bailiff’s station to get a drink.
The honchos at CBS tell TMZ … they were certainly OFFENDED by several racist and homophobic comments made by the current “Big Brother” houseguests … but hey, that’s live programming for ya.The houseguests have been under fire from what appears to be the ENTIRE INTERNET over the following comments:– GinaMarie referred to welfare as “n**ger insurance”
— Aaryn called gay contestant Andy a “queer.”
— Spencer referred to Andy as “Kermit the F**” … and praised Hitler as a gifted speaker.
CBS has released a statement to TMZ … saying, “We certainly find the statements made by several of the Houseguests on the live Internet feed to be offensive.”
However, The Eye points out that 24/7 live programming can sometimes reveal some bad things about people … saying, “At times, the Houseguests reveal prejudices and other beliefs that we do not condone.”
There have been rumors that Big Brother will be 86ing some of the offensive cast members — but it certainly doesn’t appear that’s gonna happen.
1 large can stewed tomatoes, I use the ones with spices added
cracked black pepper to taste
garlic to taste
other seasonings as desired, I use some basil, red peppers, whatever looks good, this is one of those things that it rarely is exactly the same thing twice
hot water, 1-2 cups
When you start putting vegetables in your stock pot they take up quite a bit of room. A trick I learned from my sister is to chop and add as you go, start with cabbage and pour your hot water over that right away to help it start to cook down. Heat on medium-high heat until boiling, reduce heat, cover and simmer until vegetables are as tender as you like. That’s it. Your whole house will smell amazing. I like to use it as a pre-dinner soup, it has no protein so obviously you can’t eat just this, it will fill you up so you have less room for other stuff!
Obesity rates in the United States remain unacceptably high, and the epidemic persists in affecting Blacks and Hispanics disproportionately.
Obesity is now classified as a disease. This was the final decision at the annual meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA), the organization that represents doctors nationwide.
Despite their own Council on Science and Public Health releasing a report earlier in the meeting which indicated that obesity was not a disease process, the AMA House of Delegates took the bold step to vote in opposition to this report.
Taking away the blame
For persons who struggle with their weight and the physicians that care for them, this designation of obesity as a disease is seen as a victory. Currently, there are very few resources available to those with obesity as this entity has been viewed as self-induced. The current dogma suggests that obesity can be cured with proper diet and nutrition.
Many persons believe that if you are eating the right foods in the proper portion sizes and following a dedicated exercise regimen, you will never become obese. However, science has taught us that while this may be the case for some persons, there is not a “one size fits all” approach to obesity.
Studies have shown that hormones in the body such as leptin and ghrelin play a role in the weight status of an individual. These hormones are just a few of the hormones that regulate energy balance in the human body. Leptin, a hormone that is primarily produced by fat, circulates in the bloodstream and communicates with the brain whether or not the body has had enough to eat.
For persons that have a higher leptin level, they will tend to eat more as their body does not sense that there is enough food or energy on board. The leptin level varies from person to person.
Some studies suggest that blacks are more likely to have a higher leptin level than whites. One such study indicated that leptin levels were much higher in black women, even after controlling for factors such as weight. The authors suggested that further research into leptin is needed to investigate racial differences in obesity-related diseases.
Healthy foods that rev up your metabolism, helping to kick it into high gear. Combine this with 30 minutes of exercise 4 times a week and watch your body change! Proper fuel for better performance!
Paula Deen, while planning her brother’s wedding in 2007, was asked what look the wedding should have. She replied, “I want a true southern plantation-style wedding.” When asked what type of uniforms the servers should wear, Paula stated, “well what I would really like is a bunch of little n*ggers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around;
Black staff had to use the back entrance to enter and leave restaurant;
Black staff could only use one bathroom;
Black staff couldn’t work the front of the restaurants;
Brother Bubba stated his wishes: “ I wish I could put all those n*ggers in the kitchen on a boat to Africa”;
Bubba asked a black driver and security guard “don’t you wish you could rub all the black off you and be like me? You just look dirty; I bet you wish you could.” The guy told Bubba he was fine as is;
Bubba on President Obama: they should send him to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, so he could n*gger-rig it;
He shook an employee (Black again) and said” F your civil rights…you work for me and my sister Paula Deen;
Paula’s son Jaime’s best friend managed the Lady & Sons restaurant. He threatened to fire all the ‘Monkeys’ in the kitchen. When Paula found out…she slapped him on the wrist and suggested that the employee visited Paula’s $13,000,000 mansion so he felt special and could be massaged.
I feel Paula Deen, her brother and anyone who treats people poorly should not be given a free pass. I wonder if Paula is truly sorry that she used the “N” word or that she was reported by someone who looks just like her. I appreciate the lady having the courage to report Paula Deen. It’s people like her and the videographer who leaked the 47% comments made by Mitt Romney who should be receiving the attention, not Paula Deen.
I used shredded cheese for this recipe because I melt the cheese in the broiler first so that the tomatoes and cilantro get covered in gooey cheese.
So take your two slices of bread and place them on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Put some cheese on the bread, then add the cilantro and tomato (each on a different slice). Then top with more cheese.
Place the tray in the broiler just long enough for the cheese to melt, about 30 seconds or so. The key here is to melt the cheese but don’t wilt the cilantro.
Remove the tray from the boiler and smear on some guac.
Add 1/2 tablespoon of butter to an iron skillet and melt it over a medium-high heat. Then place the assembled sandwich in the skillet and brown on both sides, melting the cheese further.
