Q: If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
A: No, because the definition of sound is “something that you hear”. No one’s there to hear the tree fall, so the tree doesn’t make a sound or
B: Yes, and I’ll be making plenty more “sounds” if the mf falls on the car that I left parked in the forest last night! … I know I’m gonna get a call on this one lol!
Starting right now, lets all agree to stop using the word “first” when mentioning Hillary Clinton’s ‘possible’ run for the presidency in 2016…Hello! Shirley Chisholm, okay! In fact she knocks-out two ‘firsts’– firstblack congresswoman representing New York State in the House, and first African American woman to run for the Democratic nomination for president in 1972. That’s THREE ‘FIRSTS’! Way to go Shirl! She left congress in 1983 to teach and lecture. She died in 2005.
“Service is the rent that you pay for room on this earth.” ~ Shirley Chisolm
Somebody owes Ms. Chisholm her one month’s rent, one month’s security…
Thousands of homes in New York State’s coastal areas like Brooklyn and Queens, hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy, will be bulldozed if Governor Andrew Cuomo gets his way. He’s proposing to purchase the homes from devastated residents, demolish them and have the land preserved permanently as undeveloped coastline. Cuomo’s waiting on federal approval to withdraw $400 million out of a $51 billion federal relief package to fund this grand enterprise. So far, homeowners are feeling good about the idea and are looking forward to starting their lives over ASAP. Make it so Govna!
The World Famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem, USA will open its doors for free this coming weekend to give members of the Harlem community, New York City residents and tourists alike a unique glimpse into the Apollo’s rich history. Films, exhibits, workshops, tours and a sneak preview of the Apollo’s 2013 season are all on the house, so get on the A train and head uptown! (Geez, did I really just say that?).
Today marks the 14th anniversary of the killing of Guinea immigrant Amadou Diallo, who was fired on 41 times as he stood, unarmed, in the vestibule of his apartment building in the Bronx,NY. The four police officers responsible for the killing–Sean Carroll, 37, Edward McMellon, 27, Kenneth Boss, 28, and Richard Murphy, 27–were, incredibly, acquitted just a year later of all charges in the death. Rudolph W. Giuliani was our esteemed mayor at the time I recall…
Beyonce worked hard Super Bowl Night to make sure you forget that she lip synched (to her own voice tho’!) at President Obama’s Inauguration. With her old DC Girls–Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams–in tow the reunion was on…at least for about two songs, then it was all about the B!
The movie Warm Bodies, which came out this past Friday, looks cute. Sort of a Romeo/Juliet, star crossed lovers vibe with zombies. Finally a flick where someone has something nice to say about the undead!
The New York Police Department is experimenting with scanners that measure terahertz waves released by our bodies to search for a concealed weapon without the need of a pat down first. The new procedure will now be called: Scan, Stop & Search.
While the White House assures us that the 2014 withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan is still the game plan, The Pentagon, the place where all the real war decisions are made, wants to maintain a strategic partnership with the region. You know–for training and advisory purposes. Clearly, these men have no idea of the concept of “pulling out”. Boys, even if you’re partially in it…you still up in it!
The NAACP is fighting back on NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s attempt to limit the size of sodas sold by stores in the city. The prestigious organization says its unfair targeting towards smaller mom & pop shops who sell the stuff by the drum to neighborhood kids while big food chains like Burger King and 7/11 will still be allowed to sell colossal-sized drinks to customers. Still Bloomberg wants to know:
“…how they can look themselves in a mirror knowing they are hurting, deliberately, the life expectancy and the quality of life for the people that they’re supposed to serve.”
Scratching my head on that one too. I think a better fight would be to get gym back in the schools. Remember P.E.? That class used to be a requirement to get promoted to the next grade. Give our fat-ass kids a ball, a nice shiny wooden floor and an hour to run around in each school day. Obesity problem, solved!
In the meantime, influenced by First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign against child obesity, mom Rose Cameron, CEO of WAT-AAH! is aiming to make water “cool” and contemporary to kids by using pure, unadulterated bottled water in a funky-fresh package. Way to think out the box momma!

Did you know that almost 40 percent of Americans who watch the Super Bowl tune in as much for the commercials as they do for the game? At the cost of a million or more to produce and about $4 million to put on-the-air, corporate execs have just 30 seconds to make their commercial a memorable experience or an opportunity to go drain the lizard. And the psychological dope is, there’s only a five second window to take their best shot before you’re off to microwave up another batch of your patent recipe of Five Alarm Chili Nachos With Velveeta.
So, sometimes when I’m lucky I turn on the tube and with minimal surfing I find the perfect program to satisfy my LearnSomethingNewToday gland. Found just that on, of all places, The Lifetime Channel (ugh!). Betty & Coretta was a perfect gem of a flick chronicling the relationship between the two women whose husbands had become monumental icons in the Civil Rights Movement, only to be gunned down by their detractors. Mary J. Blige as Betty Shabazz and screen veteran actress Angela Bassett as Coretta Scott King, gave me a glimpse of the powerful wives behind the martyred heroes. Their intimate friendship and valiant determination to continue the important work that their husbands gave their lives for, invigorated as well as saddened me at the same time. Narrated by the phenomenal Ruby Dee Davis, I couldn’t ask for a better chick flick. There aren’t many people who’d have the courage these two couples had in the midst of this country’s ugliest period.
Which leads me to Dr. Cornel West and his latest bitch fest regarding President Obama. West is now saying that he didn’t think it appropriate for the President to use the Bible of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for his second swearing in as President of the United States of America (C”mon! A Black male is President of the United States Cornell, dang! If only at face value that alone is worth a bit more deference from you). West says “President Obama’s actions as president are in direct contradiction to the principles and beliefs of Dr. King,” and says he speaks for the people of the movement that Dr. King was borne out of. Can I just quote something here for a minute…lemme see…oh, here it is:
“We know our father would be deeply moved to see President Obama take the oath of office using his Bible. His traveling Bible inspired him as he fought for freedom, justice and equality, and we hope it can be a source of strength for the president as he begins his second term.”
This is from King’s surviving children in a statement to the inaugural committee. Give it a rest West. Despite what you may think of Obama as president, as a Man, with a wife and two daughters whose lives are threatened everyday on the regular by haters, you’ve got to admire the courage and fortitude of his convictions to sign up for this job, twice! BTW, Obama also used the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln’s travelling Bible, for his first and second inaugurations…got a problem with that?
Remember the story about that husband whose photo journalist wife was missing in Turkey? Unfortunately they found her dead. Sarai Sierra, a 33-year-old mother of two, was last heard from on Jan. 21, the day she was due to board her flight back home. Her body was discovered last night near some ancient Turkish ruins. She had been stabbed and bludgeoned to death reports said. Ladies, please protect yourselves when travelling alone, anywhere. No suspects arrested yet. She had a 9 and 11 y.o.
Wtf!? Burger King just admitted that it was possible some of their burgers may have contained horse meat! Well– the burgers in the U.K. and Ireland BKs anyway. Hey, to each his own. I understand that such things as horse meat and scorpion eggs are delicacies in some countries, but to America’s BK: You will notify us if our menus were to take such a drastic change, won’t you?
Republican Chuck Hagel’s hearing with the Senate Armed Services Committee last Thursday was ree…dic…u…lous! The senators conducting the hearing asked the most absurd questions that embarrassed me to think other countries were tuning in as well. And Hagel seemed like he just woke up, jumped into his waiting Lincoln Town Car and got briefed by the limo driver, without his coffee; black no sugar. You don’t get the full gist of the circus atmosphere til you’ve actually sat down and read the transcript. Three of my favorites stoopid questions were:
1. Senator Richard Blumenthal, D-CT: I would like a commitment that you are committed as well to a fleet of twelve Ohio-class replacement submarines.
2. Senator Roger Wicker, R-MS: You have corrected the term Jewish lobby. And I assume the correct term now is Israel lobby or Israeli lobby. Do you still stand by your statement that they succeed in this town because of intimidation, and that it amounts to causing us to do dumb things?
3. Senator Joe Donnelly, D-IN: When we were together, I mentioned to you my visit to Crane Surface Warfare Systems, in Indiana. What they do is they work to create the technologies to control the spectrum, in effect try to win the battlefield before the battle starts on the ground. And so, we were wondering, what can be done, in this time of challenging budgets, that in the area of technology, in the area of spectrum, we can maintain our budget so that, as I said, before the war is ever started on the ground we have won it on the spectrum level?
Did they really think that Hagel would respond to these questions in a manner that may be detrimental to his appointment? Hagel “hemenna-hemenna-aaahhhh-urrr-eeehhh-ummm…” his way through the entire show. So far, scarily unimpressive as the next Secretary of Defense.
This is why I love cartoons. They’re bright and noisy, with lots colors and movement and chocked full of deep existential issues I can escape into. A great distraction from the real, sometimes less colorful but still noisy world. Come to think of it, it sounds pretty damn similar to the real, sometimes less colorful but still noisy world… Anyway, The Cartoon Channel’s Toonami (on Saturday nights til 5am!) has finally brought back some of the original anime that hooked me onto the channel years ago. Stuff like: Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha, Bleach, Naruto…I used to fall asleep during the incredibly long fight scenes in DragonBall Z lol! (haven’t brought that one back yet tho’.)
Seriously, the RESPONSIBILITY button for these two young men’s parental units needs to be reset. That the The 22-year-old Ronaiah Tuiasosopo was repeatedly molested by someone close to his father, a church pastor and youth minister is reprehensible.
His father, Titus Tuiasosopo, says it was difficult to hear the details of the abuse his son suffered.
“When he told me the location, the time, I could go back and vividly remember those trips, the times that these guys came over,” he said. If you could recall the trips so vividly but never noticed that on those days your son was acting –as I’m sure he was–‘peculiar’ ? Know your kids dammit! I’m from the ilk that believes if you’re not willing to make the ultimate sacrifice of throwing down your very lives for your kids then for God’s sake don’t have any. Anti-abortionists can kiss my ass. Raising another human being ain’t no joke brethren. As for the also 22 y.o. Manti Te’o: Why a young, more handsome-than anyone-has-a-right-to-be, Notre Dame linebacker, would settle for a virtual girlfriend rather than a flesh-and-blood cheerleader or liberal arts major is beyond me. A brief lesson in the Birds n’ Bees would have informed him that falling in love is done real time.
You never hear any news about the huge continent of Africa unless its bad news: starving, orphaned, Aids babies, coup d’états by militant juntas not keen on democratically elected officials, refugees fleeing genocidal guerrillas, Africans being experimental guinea pigs for big Pharma and now–wouldn’t you know it–Al Queda has invaded Timbuktu! (of all places) and has set up shop to spread the infamous Sharia Law across North Africa. Can you say “US Liberates Timbuktu”? No? Don’t have to, Newsweek’s February 1st issue featuring Miss Hillary on it’s cover being hailed as the ‘Most Powerful Woman In American History’ beat you to it. Wanna hear some good things about the Motherland? Check out AFRICA: The Good News.
For the billionth time President Obama has had to clarify which employers will be exempt from having to cover contraception costs for their employees. Yesterday, he instructed those with religious objections to self-certify that they are non-profits with religion as a core part of their mission. Such employers do not have to pay for services to which they morally object to such as allowing women to have control over their own bodies and enjoying the kind of sexual freedom that thus far has only been allotted to people with penis’ (What exactly is the plural of penis? Is it one of those words that you just can’t make plural by adding an “s” to it, like fungus or ox? Weird.)
So that famous weather predicting rodent, Phil of Punxsutawney, P.A. has seen his shadow today and once again, its been determined that–get this–winter is coming to an end! Really? Can a groundhog really predict when spring will arrive? I don’t know the answer to that, but I do wonder why we call animals dumb?
In time for Black History Month (you know the short one), the U.S. Postal Service will unveil a new historic Forever Stamp honoring civil rights leader Rosa Parks at the site of her famous arrest during a 100th birthday celebration for Ms. Parks on Monday, Feb. 4, hosted by Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum in historic downtown Montgomery, Alabama.
In the age of the endless quest for “the newest thing” its become way too easy to suppress our unique individuality for the sake of vogue.
We work so hard at being trendy, barely noticing that we’re relying on total strangers to dictate our life’s style, from the toys we buy to the food we’re now told are our favorites. Who died and left them boss, I wanna know?
Seeing as one day we ALL will have to Give Up Our Individual Consciousness For The Exaltation Of A Greater Singularity Of Oness With The Cosmos…but right now I resist the universal pull to mold me, shape me, amalgamate me…
Ah! But the World, she is vast my friend. And just when I think I’m out, she pulls me back in…
Here’s a look at a few trends taking hold in 2013, according to that pinnacle of trend spotter blogs, Trend Hunter:
A father has been reunited with his 22-month-old daughter who was given up for adoption at birth without his knowledge. After a grueling custody battle between the army drill sergeant, Terry Achane, and the Frei family who had adopted his daughter, a Utah judge ruled that the girl must be returned to her biological father.
“I’m just happy right now. I’m with my daughter,” Sgt. Terry Achane told “Good Morning America.”
Achane was stationed in South Carolina when his now ex-wife, Tira Bland, gave birth to their daughter Leah (who he calls Teleah) in March 2011. He expected to return to his wife and baby in Texas, where he expected the birth would take place, after the child was born, the Salt Lake Tribune reported in December. But Bland delivered Leah in Utah, instead, and gave her up for adoption just two days later. It was weeks before Achane knew his daughter had been placed for adoption.
“Utah’s laws appeal to people who want to get it done quick, rather than to people who want to get it done right,” Adam Pertman, executive director at the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, told GMA.
A design team comprised of Monadnock Development, Actors Fund Housing Development Corp. and nArchitects, has won Mayor Bloomberg’s competition, “adAPT NYC”, to create micro-apartments for New York city dwellers.
The winning unit, called “My Micro NY,” features a 10-foot ceiling and a mini outdoor deck. The units will all be built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and then transported to Manhattan. The first of the pre-fab rentals will be ready by September 2015 and will settle on 27th Street on the east side. The mayor said the project is part of his plan to create or preserve 165,000 affordable homes in the city by 2014 and will create 55 new micro units–with 40 percent slotted to be affordable housing for low and middle-income New Yorkers.
Reportedly about four times the size of a typical prison cell, the mayor had this to say of the diminutive apartment project:
“People from all over the world want to live in New York City, and we must develop a new, scalable housing model that is safe, affordable and innovative to meet their needs.”
New York journalist Greg Pollowitz who writes for Rueters stated, “If the mayor really wants to address the market for apartments in NYC, a hard look a the rent stabilization and rent control laws is needed, too. Not just a relaxation of zoning laws to provide for these tiny units.”
Last year at CES Ion Audio showed off an iPad hardware peripheral to give aspiring DJs a better way to control music on their tablets, and this year the company is back with another approach — using suction cups. Scratch 2 Go is a set of controls that users physically stick onto the face of their iPad, giving them a tactile experience without taking their fingers off the screen. Five different controls are provided: a crossbar for switching between tracks, two scrubbers for scratching your favorite MP3s, and two pairs of control knobs, ideally suited for controlling the EQ of each respective track.
Under each controller there’s a small nub, similar to what you’d see on a stylus — so they’re basically just replicating what touching the screen with your finger would do. This opens up what kind of DJ apps you can use the controls with — anything that has knobs and turntables that line up should work — though Ion Audio does offer its own iDJ 2 Go app. The controls stick easily enough to the surface of the device, and seem to offer just the right amount of resistance when removing them; not enough to get knocked off too easily, but not so strong that you’ll be deterred from yanking them off if you want to watch a movie on your iPad.
That said, this obviously isn’t an accessory package for serious musicians, but if you’re looking for a goofy bit of fun, these could be just the ticket. The Scratch 2 Go package will be available this spring for $29.
“I figured it was only a matter of time before Africa got back in the news in this manner…”
MOPTI, Mali — Deep inside caves, in remote desert bases, in the escarpments and cliff faces of northern Mali, Islamic fighters are burrowing into the earth, erecting a formidable set of defenses to protect what has essentially become al-Qaida’s new country.
They have used the bulldozers, earth movers and Caterpillar machines left behind by fleeing construction crews to dig what residents and local officials describe as an elaborate network of tunnels, trenches, shafts and ramparts. In just one case, inside a cave large enough to drive trucks into, they have stored up to 100 drums of gasoline, guaranteeing their fuel supply in the face of a foreign intervention, according to experts.
Northern Mali is now the biggest territory held by al-Qaida and its allies. And as the world hesitates, delaying a military intervention, the extremists who seized control of the area earlier this year are preparing for a war they boast will be worse than the decade-old struggle in Afghanistan.
The catalyst for the Islamic fighters was a military coup nine months ago that transformed Mali from a once-stable nation to the failed state it is today. On March 21, disgruntled soldiers invaded the presidential palace. The fall of the nation’s democratically elected government at the hands of junior officers destroyed the military’s command-and-control structure, creating the vacuum which allowed a mix of rebel groups to move in.
Earlier this year, the 15 nations in West Africa, including Mali, agreed on a proposal for the military to take back the north, and sought backing from the United Nations. Earlier this month, the Security Council authorized the intervention but imposed certain conditions, including training Mali’s military, which is accused of serious human rights abuses since the coup. Diplomats say the intervention will likely not happen before September of 2013.
“FEEL GOOD about what’s in this bottle. Our Vanilla Chai Tea is a smooth blend of brewed green tea, heart healthy soy portein, chai spices and a hint of vanilla flavor — it’s as nutritious as it is delicious!”
Let’s face it; hundreds of multi-million dollar food corporations will go out of business if even just a quarter of Americans were to suddenly decide to eat more conscientiously in regards to their good health. Eliminating foods and beverages with added sugar, salt or artificial coloring. No flavoring agents, emulsifiers, stabilizers or thickeners. No GMOs, MSG, BHA or BHT, whatever that is!
A health conscious friend of mine brought Bolthouse Farms Vanilla Chai Tea beverage to my attention. Just one taste of the drink and I fell in love. Without reading the label (I trusted that my friend had looked it over and give it his seal of approval–wrong lol!) I began chug-a-lugging the drink in short intervals, intending to have the drink as my lunch while I sat at my desk at work. After the relishing in the euphoria from the rich, creamy, vanilla-y smoothiness, I came crashing down off my high 10 minutes later. Then I got a slight headache and was a little light-headed. Checked the bottle and saw the reason: a serving size of 8 ounces of the drink garnered you 26 grams of sugar. I did the math (not quickly, because my head was still a bit foggy):1 teaspoon of sugar is about 4 grams…. so 26 grams means 6.5 teaspoons of sugar in a 1 cup serving!
And the list of ingredients didn’t make me feel any better:
“Soymilk from concentrate (water, soymilk concentrate), cane sugar, soy protein isolate, natural flavor, acacia gum, calcium (tricalcium phosphate) carrageenan, salt, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) Magnesium (magnesium oxide), green tea (water, green tea extract, vitamin B6 (pyridozine HCL), zinc (zinc sulfate), iron (ferrous lactate, vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin)”…and the green tea (the healthy junk) was actually the 11th list!
I understand that without this toxic mix of chemicals in our foods, by the time our favorite products leave their respective packaging plants and make their way to our neighborhood grocer’s freezer, they’d resemble for the most part, squirming maggots on a corpse. Did you know that there are approximately 3,000 food additives that are classified into six major categories?:
1. Nutritional supplements
Many foods are fortified with vitamins and minerals. The primary reason for this practice is to replace nutrients lost during processing and to prevent deficiency diseases. Some of the common fortifications are: vitamin D in milk, vitamin A in margarine, iron and B vitamins in breads, and iodine in table salt.
2. Preservatives
The safe-use period of many foods is greatly extended through the addition of preservatives, which retard spoilage, preserve flavor and color and keep oils from turning rancid. Preservatives protect foods, such as cured meats, from developing dangerous toxins, such as botulism, a food poisoning illness.
3. Flavoring agents
These are the most commonly used additives. Some, such as monosodium glutamate (MSG), are used to enhance flavor. Others, like chemical concentrates of a flavor such as strawberry, are used to boost flavor. Flavorings are often used when a natural flavoring is unavailable or too expensive to use in a particular commercial product.
4. Coloring agents
These additives are used strictly to make foods more attractive to the consumer. Even some fruits, like oranges, have color added to their skins to make their color match the expectations of consumers.
5. Emulsifiers, stabilizers, and thickeners
A large variety of products from this category are used to improve the texture and consistency of foods. Emulsifiers are commonly used to keep ingredients from separating in sauces and salad dressings. Lecithin, gelatin and pectin are commonly used natural emulsifiers.
6. Acids and alkalis
These additives are used to neutralize the acidity or alkalinity of certain foods. Citric acid, for instance, might be used to add tartness to certain foods.
The best advise is the obvious one; read, moderate intake and outright abstani! Our good health is our own business it seems. Food companies have their own bottom line and we are no where near it.
Here’s to Your Good Health! (however you attain it.)
