Razor Bumps, Causes and Treatments

To prevent razor bumps:

1. Before shaving take a shower to soften the hair and open pores, not a long one. Wrinkling occurs when you stay in the water for too long which makes it difficult to get a proper shave.

2. Shaving should always be done in the direction your hairs grow, otherwise you’re pulling and cutting the hair follicle in an unnatural direction which will make it susceptible to growing into your skin and cause irritation.

3. The right shaving technique should be used to prevent razor bumps. Shave in slow small strokes rinsing the razor under water to clean it between each stroke, it won’t sit flush against the skin if the blade is clogged.

4. Use a product designed to treat razor bumps, one that contains salicylic acid, glycolic acid, witch hazel, aloe, or any combination of these ingredients is good. Some products may require you to put the solution on a cotton ball and dab it on your skin while others might come in a roller bottle that’s designed to go directly on your skin.

5. Before shaving let the hairs grow out a bit. It will only irritate or tear it open by shaving over razor bumps, leaving them vulnerable to infection(and probably not removing much hair in the process). See if the hair breaks out of the bumps on its own.

6. Try not to go over the same area twice. Less irritation is caused by shaving with the grain but not as close a shave. If you are going back over an area you have already shaved you should try to use this technique.

7. Cold water should be used for rinsing. Using a cold washcloth on the area or ending your shower with a blast of cold water will close your pores, leaving them less vulnerable to irritants and infection.

8. One should keep changing their blades of the razors as the unused razors are often breeding grounds for bacteria.

9. You can use a mixture of cooled and pureed cucumber with one cup milk on razor bumps and rinse it off after 10-20 minutes. This helps prevent razor bumps.

Michael Dunn’s Jurors Still Deliberating – Asked Judge This Question

The jury weighing the fate of a white Florida man accused of killing a black teen during an argument over loud music could make a decision Friday in the much-watched case.

The jury resumed deliberations at 9 a.m. ET Friday.

Things remained silent most of the day until shortly before 5 p.m., when Judge Russell Healey answered a question from the jury: Is it possible to not reach a verdict on one count and reach a verdict on other counts?

To which Healey responded: Yes.

What’s at stake is the fate of Michael Dunn, who says he acted in self-defense when he opened fire on four teenagers in an SUV in Jacksonville in November 2012.

Prosecutors contend it was an act of murder. Dunn has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 17-year-old Jordan Davis. He also has been charged with three counts of attempted murder. If Dunn is found guilty, he faces up to life in prison.

Darren Sharper — CHARGED WITH RAPE … NFL Star Allegedly Drugged Multiple Women

Darren Sharper has just been charged with 2 counts of rape in L.A. … after the former New Orleans Saints superstar allegedly drugged multiple women and raped them in his hotel room … TMZ Sports has learned.

Among the charges … two counts of rape by use of drugs, four counts of furnishing a controlled substance and one count of possession of a controlled substance, all felonies.

Sharper — who had a Hall of Fame-caliber NFL career as a safety — is accused of drugging the women with zolpidem (Ambien).

Officials say Sharper met the two women in a West Hollywood nightclub on October 30th and invited them to another party.

On the way, officials say they stopped at Darren’s hotel room and he gave them each a shot.

The women then passed out and hours later one of the women claims she woke up with Sharper sexually assaulting her.  The second woman says she woke up and “interrupted his actions.”

Officials say Sharper STRUCK AGAIN on January 14th … when he returned to the same West Hollywood nightclub and found two more women.

Sharper allegedly pulled the same scheme — inviting them back to hs room, gave them a shot, they passed out, he raped them.

Officials say both women left his hotel and sought medical treatment.

Sharper was arrested on January 17th. He was released on $200k bail.  In addition to the rape, officials also say he was illegally in possession of morphine.

If convicted, Sharper faces more than 30 YEARS in prison. Officials are recommending the judge set his bail at $100 MILLION.

(Update: We’re told the $100 million bail was a typo … officials meant to request a $10 MILLION bail).

Officials say Sharper is also accused of raping women in 3 other states — including Arizona, Nevada and Louisiana.

As we previously reported, Sharper has addressed the allegations in Louisiana … claiming the sexual encounter was consensual.

The Best ‘Bang For Your Buck’ NYC Eateries

Nom Wah Tea Parlor (via Yelp)

Somewhere between the dirt cheap eats and budget-busting blowouts there’s a sweet spot where the quality and quantity of the food match the amount of money you’re spending. It’s the place where $2.50 gets you plump, meaty dumplings but also where an $88 prix fixe meal offers the best value at the confluence of price and quality. That’s where you get the most bang for your buck, so to speak, or where you’re getting the most for your money.

Here’s how map-making whiz Steven Melendez came up with the rankings:

One point each was awarded for:

  • Each Michelin star
  • being listed in Eater’s Top 100
  • being listed in New York Magazine’s Where To Eat 2013
  • each New York Times star above two stars
  • Zagat 2014 food score (a maximum of 30) divided by 15

The number of Health Department violation points divided by 14 (so a restaurant with a high B will lose exactly one point) was then subtracted from the total computed above. The resulting number was then divided by the cost of an average meal and drink, either as listed in Zagat or as computed from the restaurant’s online menu.

Below, Gothamist’s roundup of where to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to NYC eateries and why you should be eating there.

All Of De La Soul’s Albums Available For Free Download Today

Unless someone’s gotten 15 French Bulldogs for you, this is probably going to be the best thing that happens to you today: pioneering hip hop group De La Soul are making their entire catalog available for free downloadover the next 25 hours.

“It’s about allowing our fans who have been looking and trying to get a hold of our music to have access to it,” Posdnuos explained to Rolling Stone, noting that the myriad number of samples on their albums have prevented them from being able to release their albums on most digital services (including iTunes and Spotify). “It’s been too long where our fans haven’t had access to everything. This is our way of showing them how much we love them.”

Besides being Valentine’s Day, today marks the 25th anniversary of their landmark debut album 3 Feet High and Rising. The music will be available for download from 11 a.m. Eastern time Friday until noon on Saturday. Keep in mind that some people had trouble downloading this morning (it seems Dropbox-related), but it should hopefully be back up soon.

The band are also planning on releasing their first new album in a decade, You’re Welcome, in the coming months. “We’re just getting in the mode of constantly giving people new music,” Posdnuos added. “With us, we’ve sat a long time without releasing an album. It’s high time we start releasing a bunch of stuff because it’s there.”

Tea Party Member is President Obama’s Cousin – Compares the President to Hitler

A Kansas ‘tea party’ Republican who is running a primary campaign against incumbent GOP Sen. Pat Roberts, and who is a distant cousin of President Barack Obama, has compared the president to Adolf Hitler and a “less despotic” Benito Mussolini.

According to Mother Jones, Milton Wolf, who claims to share an ancestor, Thomas Creekmore McCurry—Obama’s great-great-grandfather and Wolf’s great-grandfather with the president,  has a history of comparing Obama and his party to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

Wolf, who claims that incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Roberts isn’t conservative enough, is an underdog in the primary contest against the sitting senator, but he does have the backing of the influential Senate Conservatives Fund  political action committee..

On his Twitter account (@miltonwolfmd), Wolf once wrote: “Other than killing Jews, what domestic policy of the Nazis do today’s American liberals oppose?”

Speaking of the Affordable Care Act, Wolf agreed with former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s unfounded assertion that there is a secret provision within the act which would impose end-of-life decisions on senior citizens.

“Promises from the White House notwithstanding, Mrs. Palin indeed was right,” Wolf wrote in 2010. “Death panels are all too real, and no family deserves to be caught up in them. Granted, some may find the term ‘death panel’ unnecessarily provocative, but then again, what exactly should we call a panel whose decisions result in death?”

Wolf has also compared Obama’s economic policies to the Holocaust, tweeting: “Scapegoats of history: Hitler – Jews & gypsies. Mussolini – Jews & Bolsheviks. #Obama – Successful Americans. #tcot #p2 #gop.

De La Soul Giving Away All Their Albums for Free

In honor of next month’s 25th anniversary of their debut album “3 Feet High and Rising,” De La Soul is making their entire catalog available for free download for 25 hours on the group’s website, reports Rolling Stone.

The download bonanza will begin today, February 14th at 11 a.m. EST and end Saturday at noon.

The move was driven in part by copyright law, which, because of the group’s use of samples, prevented sale of some their albums on iTunes.

“It’s about allowing our fans who have been looking and trying to get a hold of our music to have access to it,” De La Soul member Posdnuos told Rolling Stone. “It’s been too long where our fans haven’t had access to everything. This is our way of showing them how much we love them.”

“It’s been a trying journey. We’ve been blessed to be in the Library of Congress, but we can’t even have our music on iTunes,” he added. “We’ve been working very hard to get that solved.”

New Study Questions The Importance of Mammograms

A controversial new study has found that annual mammograms may not help reduce breast cancer deaths and may increase the number of women unnecessarily getting treated for breast cancer.

The Canadian study tracked almost 90,000 women for 25 years, and found that having an annual mammogram between the ages of 40 to 59 did not lower the chance of dying from breast cancer more than having a physical examination.
The study, which was published in BMJ on Feb. 11, disconcertingly showed that 22 percent of invasive breast cancers were overdiagnosed by mammography, meaning the tumors would usually have been too small to cause symptoms or become life-threatening.

The BMJ researchers said that the current screening guidelines may be too much, and should be reconsidered.

Breast cancer screening guidelines in the U.S. have been a source of debate in recent years.

The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force, a panel of medical experts that advice the government, said in 2009 that women should only get mammograms every two years starting at 50. Before that age, the decision to be tested should be between the woman and her doctor, which usually meant it was not recommended unless the woman had high risk factors for breast cancer like specific genes or family history.

The panel argued that many mammograms lead to false positive results, and were detecting cancers that were too small to need treatment, leading to unnecessary procedures.

A later JAMA study showed that women who followed the panel’s recommendation were at no higher risk of late-stage cancers than women who got the test every year. However another study found that in women over 50 who had mammograms, for every one life saved, there were three women who were overdiagnosed.

Tyson Beckford’s Nephew Charged With Manslaughter

A fatal collision occurred in Greenwich Village early yesterday morning when a truck plowed into a city bus. The bus’ operator, William Pena, was thrown from the vehicle. He later died beneath the wheels of the bus. The driver of the truck was 22-year-old Domonic Whilby of Georgia, reports The New York Daily News.

Just hours before the pre dawn collision, Whilby was celebrating at a birthday bash at club 1 Oak for supermodel Shanina Shaik with his famous uncle, Tyson Beckford. Sources say that after a night of hard partying Whilby was escorted from the club around 3:30 am and was thrown out of Dream Downtown Hotel after he passed out on the second floor. Onlookers say that he became irritated when he was unable to locate the limousine that was scheduled to pick him up. The super at two W. 16th St. apartment buildings, Victor Vega, says that he witnessed Whilby randomly pound on multiple apartment doors.

“He was sweating like a mad dog,” said Vega. “He had to be high on drugs. He started kicking and banging the doors.”

Shortly after, Vega says Whilby jumped into a running 10 Rabbits Granola truck and sped away after the truck’s driver got out to make an early morning delivery. One witness tells NYDN that Whilby blew though a red light just moments before the fatal crash.

“It’s just the wrong place at the wrong time, I guess,” said the victim’s cousin, Edwin Espinal. “That’s what happened to William — an honest, working guy and he paid the consequences. Unbelievable.”

“William was a great person,” added Pena’s brother, Alex Pena. “I can’t say no more about him, great person … He was a great guy every way you can put it.”

Four others were injured in the accident, including a person on a scooter, who was dragged 50 ft.

“He didn’t even brake,” said Eddie Abdelmoty. “My tires blew up … He went right through the red light at the end of the block.”

Police say Whilby suffered minor neck injuries. Once apprehended by officers, he was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was likely tested for drugs and alcohol. He is facing 10 charges, some of which include manslaughter, two counts of grand larceny, three counts of criminal assault, criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

Pena leaves behind a wife and 14-year-old daughter. Beckford’s manager has declined to comment on the tragedy.

Zimmerman’s Lawyer Thinks Michael Dunn Will Be Found Guilty

As the 12 jurors decide the fate of Michael Dunn, an entire community is waiting for that decision.

First Coast News spoke to criminal defense attorney Mark O’Mara Thursday morning and he believes Michael Dunn will be found guilty.

“I don’t think the jury is going to be able to get past the fact that Dunn did not contact the police right away and that is going to bleed back over into whether or not he was justified in the shooting and they are going to find it was not justified,” said O’Mara.

As we enter day two of verdict watch, Mr. O’Mara said he doesn’t think the length of time a jury deliberates means the jurors are swaying one way or another. With a lot of evidence to go through plus complicated wording in the law, it could take time for the jurors to reach a verdict.

Security was also a big concern for Mr. O’Mara when he defended George Zimmerman. O’Mara believes if a not guilty verdict came back, there could be even more community outrage.

“If he is found not guilty then yes I think that there will be a backlash in the community about a not guilty verdict even more so in this case than the Zimmerman case. The facts of this case do not seem to support self defense near as much as the Zimmerman case did,” said Mr. O’Mara.
