‘Fake’ Sign Language Interpreter Marred Mandela Memorial

As President Obama and other world leaders spoke Tuesday in Johannesburg at a memorial for Nelson Mandela, a man stood nearby and appeared to be doing sign language interpretation. Many in the deaf community are outraged because the man appeared to be faking.

There’s outrage among many in the deaf community over the appearance on stage Tuesday of a man who they say was only pretending to do sign language interpretation as President Obama and other world leaders eulogized Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Among those who noticed what was happening was Wilma Newhoudt, the first deaf person elected to South Africa’s parliament and a vice president of the World Federation of the Deaf.

“Shame on this male so called interpreter on the stage,” she wrote on Twitter during the memorial service. “What is he signing? He knows that the deaf cannot vocally boo him off. Shame on him!”

Others who protested included Bruno Peter Druchen, national director at the Deaf Federation of South Africa. “Please get RID of this CLOWN interpreter, please!” he tweeted.

The Limping Chicken, a U.K. website that focuses on news involving the deaf community, posted a video showing both the “fake” and a sign language interpreter who many TV viewers saw in a small box superimposed on their screens. The woman in that box was actually interpreting what was said, Limping Chicken reports. You can see how different her actions and gestures are compared to those of the man on stage.

As you can see from the photo we’ll attach to the post, the man was within just a few feet of Obama as the president delivered his remarks.

IOL, a news site from South Africa’s Independent Newspapers, reports that “government spokeswoman Phumla Williams said she was unable to respond to the allegations immediately, as she did not know which department procured the service provider. She said she did not know about his qualifications or expertise.”

Update at 1:45 p.m. ET. White House Regrets Distraction:

Asked about the apparently bogus interpreter, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Wednesday that “it’s a shame that you had a service that was dedicated to honoring the life and celebrating the legacy of one of the great leaders of the 20th century has gotten distracted by this and a couple of other issues that are far less important than the legacy of Nelson Mandela.”

The “other issues” he was referring to would include the handshake between Obama and Cuban leader Raul Castro, and the selfie taken by Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt of Denmark.

Update at 11:20 a.m. ET. Government Is “Looking Into This Matter.”

The national government just emailed reporters with a statement about Tuesday’s memorial service. In it, there’s this passage:

“As we look at yesterday’s events, government has noted the concern expressed in various quarters about the alleged incorrect use of sign language at the National Memorial Service.

“Government is looking into this matter but has not been able to conclude this inquiry due to the demanding schedule of organising events related to the State Funeral.

“Government will report publicly on any information it may establish but wishes to assure South Africans that we are clear in defending the rights and dignity of people with disabilities.”

Right Wing Nut Says South Africa Could Have Been Better under Apartheid

WorldNetDaily columnist and regular Fox News guest Erik Rush told his radio show’s listeners last week that while he opposes apartheid, South Africa may have declined since the fall of the racist system, adding that the late Nelson Mandela “didn’t do much.”

“You know I hate to rain on the parade here, but there really isn’t a whole lot to celebrate aside from this synthetic symbolism that is being made out of someone who, you know, didn’t do much,” Rush said. “Apartheid went away, great. There are South African blacks who have told friends of mine they wish it was back because the country was safer, if you can believe that.”

Poll: President’s Approval Rating Goes Back Up

The political damage absorbed by President Obama and his signature legislative achievement appears to have subsided, a poll released Tuesday found.

According to the latest Pew Research Center/USA Today poll, Obama’s approval rating has finally ended what’s been a five-month dip, although his standing is still considerably lower than where it was at the start of the year. The poll showed 45 percent of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing, compared with 49 percent who disapprove.

While that’s lower than the 55 percent approval rating Obama boasted in a Pew poll a year ago, it’s essentially the same as where it stood before the Affordable Care Act’s flawed rollout took a huge political toll.

In September, before both the government shutdown and the launch of Obamacare, Pew found that 44 percent approved of Obama while 49 percent disapproved.

Tuesday’s poll showed ratings for the Affordable Care Act also returning to pre-rollout levels, though the law still remains unpopular. Forty-one percent said they approve of the law, while 55 percent said they disapprove — virtually identical to Pew’s poll in September, when 42 percent approved and 53 percent disapproved.

It’s perhaps a sign that the political fallout from the law’s bumpy launch has abated.

A McDonald’s Worker Must Work 4 Months to See What CEO Makes in 1 Hour

That’s working 4 months and doing overtime the whole time. How is this right?

A McDonald’s employee working overtime for nearly four months straight would make as much as the company’s former CEO earned in just 60 minutes, according to an analysis published Tuesday.

The analysis, compiled by the financial information company NerdWallet, assumes the average salary of a McDonald’s hourly worker is $7.73, based on information from self-reported salary site GlassDoor.com. Official figures on McDonald’s worker pay aren’t publicly available, but the median wage for fast-food workers overall is $8.90 per hour.

By comparison, former McDonald’s CEO James Skinner raked in $9,247 for an hour of his precious time last year, according to NerdWallet. (The analysis focuses on Skinner and not current CEO Donald Thompson because full data on the latter’s salary isn’t publicly available yet.)

Homeless Man Learns to Code, Launches App

A homeless man in New York, after receiving coding lessons from a helpful Samaritan, has launched a new app for carpooling with a focus on saving the environment.
(Credit: Journeyman)

Back in August, programmer Patrick McConlogue offered homeless man Leo Grand a choice: US$100, or 16 coding lessons. Grand, who had been homeless since 2011 after losing his job at insurance provider MetLife and being priced out of his home when a high-rise apartment block was built nearby, didn’t have to think for long: coding lessons it was.

After furnishing Grand with a refurbished Chromebook and three books on coding, McConlogue met with him every weekday morning for an hour for a lesson. Now, Grand has released his very first app: Trees for Cars, available for iOS and Android.

The idea behind the app, Grand said, is to decrease the number of cars on the roads with a view to reducing CO2 emissions. Users sign up, specify whether or not they want to catch a ride or offer one, and the app will connect them with like-minded carpoolers nearby. The app will then track how much CO2 was saved by all the passengers.

Every line of code was written by Grand, and all proceeds from the AU$0.99 app sales will go directly to him.

You can check out the course McConlogue taught Grand here, read the story of thisremarkable journey here, and pick up the app for AU$0.99 for on iTunes and Google Play.

Right Wing Nut Compares George Zimmerman to Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa

So all George Zimmerman had to do was murder an innocent teenager. That’s it! That’s all he had to do for these Republican nuts to compare him to Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa!

His name is Jack Cashill. He is a contributor to a right wing blog called “World Net Daily.” Cashill, a huge defender of George Zimmerman, believes that Zimmerman did no wrong the night he murdered Trayvon, saying that Zimmerman is the least racist person in Florida. He then went on to say that if the U.S Justice Department went on to investigate George Zimmerman, “it’s like going after Nelson Mandela on Civil Rights or Mother Teresa!”

President Shook Hands with Raúl Castro Castro – White House Says it Wasn’t Planned

White House aide Ben Rhodes told reporters the two exchanged no words more substantive than a greeting.

The Cuban government said the gesture may show the “beginning of the end of the US aggressions”.

The US broke off diplomatic ties with Cuba in 1961 as Fidel Castro aligned with the Soviet Union in the Cold War.

And on Tuesday after the handshake, a White House official said the Obama administration still had grave concerns about human rights violations in Cuba, Reuters reported.

Republicans on Capitol Hill were quick to condemn the gesture, with one Republican congresswoman chiding the move during a unrelated hearing on Tuesday.

“Sometimes a handshake is just a handshake, but when the leader of the free world shakes the bloody hand of a ruthless dictator like Raul Castro, it becomes a propaganda coup for the tyrant,” Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who is known for her opposition to the Castro government, told Secretary of State John Kerry.

“Could you please tell the Cuban people living under that repressive regime that, a handshake notwithstanding, the US policy toward the cruel and sadistic Cuban dictatorship has not weakened.”

Gradual thaw disrupted

The last US president to shake a Cuban leader’s hand was President Bill Clinton, who greeted President Fidel Castro, Raul’s brother and predecessor, at a 2000 UN General Assembly meeting.

Under President Obama, the US has eased restrictions on Cuban-Americans travelling to the island and on remittances between family members across the two countries

Fox News Welcomes You To Their – “Holiday Party” #WarOnChristmas

Fox News conveniently created this fake “War On Christmas.” claiming that people are taking “Christ” out of Christmas and using “Happy Holidays” instead. Well it seems Fox News is also waging a war on Christmas.

In this 2010 picture, Fox News dropped the “Christ” from their Christmas party announcement and proclaimed the Fox News “Holiday Party.”

Where are the War On Christmas policemen,  Bill O’Reilly and Sarah Palin when you need them?

Jon Stewart to Ignorant Santorum – “Obamacare is NOT Apartheid!”

Jon Stewart kicked off this week’s “Daily Show” by shedding light on some truly odd reactions that some folks had about the passing of Nelson Mandela — including at least one prominent Republican.

Newt Gingrich and Ted Cruz, to their credit, offered sincere notes of gratitude for the South African leader’s life work on their respective Facebook pages. What they did not expect, however, were the swift and racist reactions they saw from several of their fans. Example: “This clench-first gorilla [sic] warrior does not deserve respect from informed Americans,” one user wrote on Gingrich’s Facebook.

Stewart was hardly surprised by the outpouring of bile. “Of course, that’s why the Internet was invented,” he said. “To say hateful things with greater efficiency, reach and freedom to keep people from finding out how truly disgusting you are in your home. ‘I would never say those things, it was Dr. Awesomeballs69!'”

Racist Facebook fans are one thing, but Stewart could not let an actual Republicanleader off the hook so easily. Rick Santorum, appearing on “The O’Reilly Factor,” somehow equated apartheid, South Africa’s former system of segregation that Mandela helped end, to the Affordable Care Act.

“The systemic subjugation of a race of people is different than the establishment of subsidized insurance exchanges,” Stewart helpfully explained before channeling his inner Julie Andrews with a “Sound of Music” parody: “Obamacaaare is not apartheeeeeid!”

What Does Your Hair Say About Your Health

It is important to know that some conditions affect your hair as much as your body, the following guide will help you separate myths from facts when it comes to your health.

  • Dry, limp, thin-feeling hair

Hair dyes, hair blowers, and swimming in chlorinated water may lead to dry hair, but be alert because it may also, be an indicator of an underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism especially if you notice fatigue, weight gain, slow heart rate, and feeling cold all the time.

  • Scaly or crusty patches on the scalp

This usually indicates psoriasis, which can be distinguished from other dandruff-like skin conditions by the presence of a thickening, scab-like surface

  • Thinning hair over the whole head

There are many things that can cause this effect, such as a sudden psychological or physical stressor, like a divorce or job loss, or it can also mean a high fever from the flu or an infection and diabetes. There are many medications that can cause hair loss as side effect too, such as birth pills, lithium and Depakote. Autoimmune diseases can also promote sudden hair loss. Hormone changes and thyroid disease, especially hypothyroidism, are some of the most common causes of hair loss.

  •  Overall hair loss that appears permanent

It’s usually caused by a change in the pattern of the sex hormones, but diseases and other underlying conditions can cause this type of hair loss by affecting the hormones

  • Dry, brittle hair that breaks off easily

Breakage is most frequently the result of hair becoming over-brittle from chemical processing or dyeing, but there are certain health conditions that also lead to brittle, fragile hair, such as: Cushing’s syndrome, a disorder of the adrenal glands that causes excess production of the hormone cortisol, and hypoparathyroidism, a condition that usually either hereditary or the result of injury to the parathyroid glands during head and neck surgery.
Yellowish flakes on the hair and scaly, itchy patches on the scalp

It could mean a chronic inflammatory condition of the scalp that causes skin to develop scaly patches, often in the areas where the scalp is oiliest. When the flaky skin loosens, it leaves the telltale “dandruff” flakes.
