Newt is the ultimate politician. He sees the sinking ship which is Palin, and this is his way of distancing himself from her brand.

Newt, just like most Republicans who are honest publicly, understand that Palin has no chance of winning, and will prove to be a joke if she really decides to run. Newt also wants to take a few shots at Palin, just in case they end up competing against each other in a GOP primary.
