If it worked in the Massachusetts special election to replace Ted Kennedy with Republican/Teaparty favorite Scott Brown, then why not have all senators adopt the same winning formula. Fool the voters into think you’re one of them, by driving around in a pickup truck.
This time, the pickup truck is a white Ford F150. And this time, it’s driven by Daniel Webster, the Republican challenger to Democratic favorite, Alan Grayson for Florida’s District 8.
Webster starts out the ad by reciting all the common Republican talking points about how Washington is out of control and he, Mr. Daniel Webster is the only one capable of reigning in all the wasteful spending. He criticized Alan Grayson as someone who votes with Nancy Pelosi “98% of the time,” then added, “they’re in this together.”
But the real selling point was not the GOP talking points, we here those every day! It wasn’t even the surrounding where the commercial took place, which looked like the setting of a barber shop. No, the real selling point that Webster wanted the voters of Florida’s District 8 to see, was his truck.
Ford built the F150 and marketed it as every man’s truck, and that’s the image the Republican is looking for. They are an elite class that snubs their noses at middle class America, and then assumes that driving the every man’s truck, they will connect with the everyday people. Scott Brown’s truck got almost as much publicity as he did in Massachusetts, and this is exactly the goal with Daniel Webster.
Fool them with the truck, and deal with policies later.
GOP must really think Americans are that slow. I can hear the average American voter in District 8 now;
“Ah, Mary Joe, whose are you voting for in November?”
“I don’t know Billy Bob, but he sure drives a nice Ford F150. He’s a common man, and his truck is white.”
