Over the past few weeks, we’ve heard a lot of talk about President Obama’s religion. Is he a Muslim, is he a Christian, or is he a practicing Bush-Doctor from the jungles of Kenya. What we haven’t heard mentioned is the fact that this question has already been settled by the United States Constitution. It states that no religious test shall be required for office.
Where are all the patriotic Constitution loving right wingers now. Have I lost anyone yet? Are you still there reading? Okay, continuing…
Article 6 of the Constitution states:
“The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”
So is that the point where the right wingers tune out? Is this where you “change channel” and switch to Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck for reinforcement, for reassurance as to why you should continue questioning the President’s religion? Is your pocket size Constitution irrelevant on this issue?
No need to worry, maybe this too can be repeal by the Constitution loving GOP senators – you know, the same Senators who took an oath to uphold this very same document. They quote and defend it at every junction, except when it clearly points out where they are wrong. Maybe they – your elected Republican officials – will be able to satisfy your prejudice and amend this clause in the Constitution to better suit your personal needs.
But until that fateful moment when they amend this clause in the Constitution, why not live up to your self-described patriotic love of this country and all it represents, and respect the Christian faith that the president proclaims.
After all, isn’t that what the constitution asks of us?
